Stop searching. Start researching.
Google gives you ten blue links. ChatGPT gives you an answer with no sources. Perplexity gives you a clear, written answer with a citation on every claim, drawn from the live web—plus a research mode that turns one question into a fully cited, multi-page report.
That's why researchers, students, journalists, and analysts have quietly made Perplexity their default. And that's why this book exists.
Perplexity: The Research Playbook is the plain-English guide to getting cited, trustworthy answers out of Perplexity—every plan, every Focus mode, every model, explained for real people doing real work. It covers what each mode is for, when to reach for which, and how to turn a vague question into a finished, sourced brief.
What's inside
- Get oriented and set up. What Perplexity is and how it differs from Google, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini; how to choose between the Free, Pro, Max, and Enterprise tiers; and how to set up the web app, mobile and desktop apps, the Comet Browser, and the Chrome extension.
- Master the multi-model engine. Perplexity's own Sonar model alongside the leading models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI—including the reasoning models—plus a clear rule of thumb for when to reach for which.
- Run real research workflows. Quick Search versus Pro Search, multi-step reasoning with clarifying questions, evaluating and verifying sources, building from a simple question to a complex investigation, and saving and organizing your threads.
- Use the right Focus mode for the job. Web, Academic, Writing, Video, Social, Finance, and Labs—each with practical use cases and step-by-step walkthroughs.
- Unlock the platform. Spaces for collaborative research with enterprise file sync, Pages for publishing cited reports, and Deep Research for multi-step investigations that output presentations, spreadsheets, dashboards, and full websites.
- Make it work for your world. Targeted chapters for students and educators (with a clear take on academic integrity), business teams (team Spaces, governance, enterprise rollout), and developers using the Perplexity API and Sonar models.
