This book is a fictional account of Tom and Flora Cole’s lives as they adjusted from having it all to starting over when they had a streak of bad luck. All the characters and events are figments of my imagination. The story takes place in West Virginia and Kentucky in the late 1920’s, initially, then moves forward quickly to life in the late 1940’s in the Appalachian Mountains. The hardships and devastation of the Great Depression and World War II were in the past. People’s lives were getting back to normal. Jobs in industry picked up. People felt positive about their future. Even in the depressed coal mining and strip-mining areas of West Virginia life was improving, that is until management began to lay-off workers and mining accidents increased. The year was 1947. Tom Cole operated a large earth moving machine in a strip-mining area of West Virginia. His job had its dangers, but pay was good. Tom and Flora Cole lived sometimes above their means and frivolous spending was their downfall causing them to relocate to the mountains of Appalachia, and a new career in lumbering.
