The Philosophy of Mathematics: With Special Reference to the Elements of Geometry and the Infinitesimal Method, written by Albert Taylor Bledsoe, is a comprehensive examination of the foundational principles of mathematics. This book explores the philosophical underpinnings of mathematics, including its relationship to logic and the nature of mathematical truth. Bledsoe's work focuses on the Elements of Geometry and the Infinitesimal Method, two key areas of study in mathematics. He delves into the history of these concepts, tracing their development from ancient times to the modern era. He also examines the controversies surrounding these ideas, including the debate over the existence of infinitesimals in mathematics. The book is divided into several sections, each of which explores a different aspect of the philosophy of mathematics. Bledsoe begins by examining the nature of mathematical truth and its relationship to logic. He then moves on to a discussion of the Elements of Geometry, exploring the axioms and postulates that underlie this branch of mathematics. In the latter half of the book, Bledsoe turns his attention to the Infinitesimal Method, a technique used in calculus to study infinitesimally small quantities. He examines the controversy surrounding this method and its relationship to other areas of mathematics. Throughout the book, Bledsoe provides detailed explanations of key concepts and ideas, making it accessible to both students and scholars of mathematics. His writing is clear and concise, and he uses numerous examples and illustrations to help readers understand complex mathematical concepts. Overall, The Philosophy of Mathematics: With Special Reference to the Elements of Geometry and the Infinitesimal Method is an important contribution to the study of mathematics and its philosophical foundations. It provides a thorough and comprehensive examination of key concepts and ideas, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the history and philosophy of mathematics. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
