Heat exchangers are important, and used frequently in the processing, heat and power, air-conditioning and refrigeration, heat recovery, transportation and manufacturing industries. Such equipment is also important in electronics cooling and for environmental issues like thermal pollution, waste disposal and sustainable development. The present book concerns plate heat exchangers (PHEs), which are one of the most common types in practice. The overall objectives are to present comprehensive descriptions of such heat exchangers and their advantages and limitations, to provide in-depth thermal and hydraulic design theory for PHEs, and to present state-of-the-art knowledge. The book starts with a general introduction and historical background to PHEs, then discusses construction and operation (PHE types, plate pattern, etc.) and gives examples of PHEs in different application areas. Material issues (plates, gaskets, brazing materials) and manufacturing methods are also treated. The major part of the book concerns the basic design methods for both single-phase and two-phase flow cases, various flow arrangements, thermal-hydraulic performance in single-phase flow and for PHEs operating as condensers and evaporators. Fouling problems are also discussed and in a section on extended design and operation issues, modern Research and Development (R & D) tools like computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are discussed. Unique features for PHEs are discussed throughout.

Lieke Wang has been a researcher in the Division of Heat Transfer at the Lund Institute of Technology for over six years. Bengt Sundén graduated as a M. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden in 1973 and presented his PhD-thesis in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in 1979 at Chalmers University. In 1980 he was appointed Docent (the highest academic degree in Sweden) and held positions there as Research Associate, Docent and University lecturer. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer at Lund University (Engineering faculty = Lund Institute of Technology), Lund, Sweden. Professor Sundén has been teaching undergraduate courses in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Basic Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Numerical Heat Transfer. He has taught graduate courses in Heat Transfer, Heat and Mass Transfer, Convective Boiling and Condensation, Numerical Flow Simulation, Thermal Radiation, Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer in Combustion Processes. He has supervised more than 135 M. Sc. theses, many of them in cooperation with industries. He has also taught a number of in-house courses for some companies. The current research topics are: Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers, e.g., radiators, oil coolers; numerical methods of convective flow and heat transfer in complex narrow geometries, e.g., cooling of combustor walls, recuperators and intercoolers in gas turbine systems; combustion related heat transfer including thermal radiation, gas turbine heat transfer, evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers, thermal imaging techniques, heat exchanger networks (process integration), heat and mass transfer topics (e.g., fuel cells). The publication list includes about 300 papers in well-recognized journals, books and proceedings. Professor Sundén has also delivered several invited lectures and papers. He has been editor of thirteen books published by international publishing houses. Two textbooks (presently in Swedish) have been issued. Professor Sundén is involved in referee tasks for more than twenty-five international journals and has been active in several international and organizing committees, boards etc. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers. He is also editor-in-chief for a book series Developments in Heat Transfer. In addition, he is in the editorial board for another four journals. Professor Sunden is a fellow of ASME. From 2005, he will serve as associate editor of the prestigious ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. Professor Sundén has supervised (at Chalmers and Lund University) 25 licentiate of Engineering theses and 21 doctoral (PhD) theses. Presently he is supervising 12 hired PhD-students. Raj M.
