Collated and complete. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"; 18.7 x 11.5 cm). Superb period-style paneled calf by master binder Philip Dusel, with raised bands and gilt-lettered morocco label, gilt tooling to board edges, endpapers renewed with period paper. Moderate toning to interior. A fine, exceptionally handsome copy. $1,250. * Only edition. This is the only edition edited and expanded by the prolific legal writer Giles Jacob. While Sir Matthew Hale's Summary (first published 1678) was the essential precursor to his landmark History of the Pleas of the Crown, this 1716 edition represents a unique effort to modernize and complete Hale's work for an 18th-century audience. Publisher John Nutt issued this work in two parts, often sold separately. This copy features Jacob's specific "Supplement." Interestingly, this copy contains the general title page intended for the complete two-part set-a notable contemporary assembly error that clarifies its publication history. Hale remains one of the most cited authorities in the history of common law; Jacob's "Continuation" captures the transition of criminal jurisprudence during the early Enlightenment.
