Descrizione dell’articolo da parte del venditore

Octavo, terra cotta cloth (hardcover), map illustrated endpapers, 117 pp. Very Good, with sunning to spine. Containing numerous photographs of Florida from the mid-20th century. From Introduction: Florida is a land of no snow, of endless sunshine, glittering beaches, and exotic gardens; it is a country of luxurious estates, expensive hotels, and swanky night clubs -- a place for the enjoyment of horse races, jai-alai, and an endless succession of sports; in all, it is a tropical playground to which each winter a population greater than Florida's own descends from every other state in the Union. But to the native and to those visitors who look closely, Florida is much more. It was in quest of a fabulous fountain of youth, as well as of gold, that white men first reached the shores of what is now Florida. The Indians of Puerto Rico, of which Ponce de Leon, companion to Columbus on his second voyage, had been governor, came before them; and it is recorded in the archives of Spain how Andreas the Bearded claimed that his father drank of the magic waters and came back home renewed in health and in vigor. Ponce de Leon and his crew first saw the shores in March 1513. "And, wrote the royal historian, Antonio de Herrera, "believing that this land was an island, they named it La Florida, because it has very beautiful view of many cool woodlands, and it was level and uniform; and because, however, they discovered it in the time of the Feast of Flowers."
