Polychrome Rock Architectures. Problems of Colour Preservation in the Etruscan Necropolis of Sovana

NUOVO -- The funerary architecture in tuff of the necropolis of Sovana and the surrounding area has been considered archaeological evidence of great importance ever since the 19th century, when it never failed to arouse the admiring interest of English travelers, who first understood the importance of documenting what appeared before their eyes. In a sense sharing the same awe of these early visitors, reading the articles of this volume reveals a completely new vision of these ruins, which now, thanks to timely and careful analytical work and study, we can imagine with a wealth of colour that until recently was almost unknown for these monuments. Though blending today with the natural surroundings thanks to the colour of the tuff, they once appeared visible at a great distance thanks to their bright decorations. Therefore it is essential to promote campaigns of documentation to enable us, armed with new technologies of analysis and mapping, a thorough understanding of these contexts and their criticality. This need was the starting point for the work presented here, fruit of a joint plan between the State and the Region of Tuscany, as part of a project to assess the state of preservation of our open-air archaeological heritage in Pitigliano, Sorano and Castell'Azzara. The fortunate discovery in 2004 of the Demoni Alati tomb, unusually displaying abundant traces of painted decoration on the surfaces, has refocused the attention of scholars on the topic of Etruscan polychrome sculpture and painting, today only rarely the subject of systematic and comprehensive articles. The multidisciplinary approach to analyze paint film samples allowed the Authors to create analytical charts for each tomb and to draw significant conclusions about details of the decorative painting techniques, raw materials and binders used as well as the tastes and the trends followed by Etruscan architects and decorators. This allowed the reconstruction of the evolution of the techniques over the centuries and the functional relationship between them and the surfaces to be decorated. L'architettura funeraria in tufo della necropoli di Sovana e della zona circostante è stata considerata una testimonianza archeologica di grande importanza fin dal diciannovesimo secolo, quando non mancava mai di suscitare l'interesse ammirato dei viaggiatori inglesi, che per primi compresero l'importanza di documentare ciò che appariva davanti ai loro occhi. Condividendo, in un certo senso, il medesimo stupore di questi primi visitatori, leggere gli articoli di questo volume fa scoprire una visione completamente nuova di queste rovine, che ora, grazie ad un lavoro e ad uno studio puntuali e approfonditi, possiamo immaginare con una ricchezza di colori quasi sconosciuta fino a poco tempo fa. Anche se oggi essi non emergono dall'ambiente circostante a causa del colore del tufo, una volta, grazie alle loro brillanti decorazioni, apparivano visibili a grande distanza. È dunque di fondamentale importanza promuovere campagne di documentazione che ci permettano, con l'ausilio delle nuove tecnologie di analisi e catalogazione, una conoscenza approfondita di questi contesti e della loro criticità. Questa necessità è stata il punto di partenza per il lavoro qui presentato, frutto di un programma congiunto tra lo Stato e la Regione Toscana, nell'ambito di un progetto per valutare lo stato di conservazione del nostro patrimonio archeologico a cielo aperto a Pitigliano, Sorano e Castell'Azzara.
