I Am Power Over Me, Not Them is an inspiring story about confidence, courage, and the strength that comes from within. The book follows Kendi, a young athlete who begins to doubt herself after facing pressure and unkind words during an important basketball game. When she misses a key shot, she carries the disappointment with her and feels as though she has given her power away.
A visit to the beach becomes a turning point. As Kendi feels the force of the waves and discovers a conch seashell in the sand, she reconnects with her inner strength. She realizes that she has power over her thoughts, feelings, and actions, and that no one else gets to decide how she sees herself.
Through this experience, Kendi learns to activate her IMPowerment App, a non digital internal framework built on Attitude, Perspective, and Perseverance. With these tools, she returns to the softball field with renewed confidence and a stronger sense of self.
This book is ideal for families, classrooms, counselors, and anyone who wants to help children build confidence and self belief. It reminds readers of all ages that true power comes from within and that they are capable, strong, and enough.
Beyond Kendi’s journey, this book offers a relatable and heartfelt look at the moments when children begin to question themselves. Many young readers will recognize the pressure of wanting to perform well, the sting of unkind words, and the heavy feeling that comes from letting others influence how they see themselves. Kendi’s story gives children a safe and encouraging way to explore these emotions while learning that they have more control than they realize.
The beach scene serves as a powerful metaphor for clarity and renewal. The waves, the wind, and the discovery of the conch seashell all work together to help Kendi understand that strength is not something she has to earn from others. It is something she already carries inside. The seashell becomes a symbol of her ability to pause, breathe, and reconnect with her inner voice whenever she feels overwhelmed or discouraged.
The IMPowerment App introduces a simple, memorable way for children to understand how their thoughts shape their experiences. Attitude helps them choose how they want to show up in the world. Perspective helps them step back and see challenges from a new angle. Perseverance reminds them that progress comes from trying again, even when things feel difficult. These ideas are woven naturally into the story, giving children practical tools they can use in their own lives.
Parents, teachers, and counselors will appreciate how the book opens the door to meaningful conversations about confidence, self worth, and emotional strength. The story encourages children to reflect on their own experiences, recognize their inner power, and understand that setbacks do not define them. It also reassures adults that the lessons they teach and the support they offer truly matter.
