CHAPTER 1
HOW TO EXPERIENCE GRACETHE TRIGGER
Moses was keeping the flock.EXODUS 3:1
One of the surprising things about the Bible is the unsurprisinglives led by so many of the Bible people. They were just plain folks like most of us. They led perfectlynormal, average lives. Gideon was a farmer, Isaiaha priest, Jeremiah a youth, Peter a businessman, Matthewan Internal Revenue agent.
Moses was a small businessman, minding his ownbusiness, doing his job, "keeping the flock," leading anormal, average life when the bush burned (Exod. 3:2).That says a lot. One of the conditions of the religious life,it seems, is that there are no conditions.
All we have to do to experience grace is simply to goabout business as usual, doing our jobs, leading our normal, average lives. Gideon went about his farming, Isaiahhis priesting, Jeremiah his teenaging, Peter his fishing business. They were doing nothing out of the ordinary whenthey were surprised by grace.
So often we feel we have to have a mountaintop experienceto be religious. We'll experience God when we cryat a wedding or get a promotion or get into the college ofour choice or have a date with the boy or girl of ourdreams.
Or we feel we need a Death Valley experience to understandgrace. We need to cry at a funeral or go throughthe loss of a job or mentor or friend or the nightmare ofalcoholism or drug addiction.
But here was Moses simply going about his life, ploddingalong as most of us do from day to day, leading aperfectly normal, happy life with his wife and son andfamily and friends. Experiencing grace begins in a mostunsurprising way. It is simply a matter of being who weare. As I heard a man joke, "I'm just a narrow-mindedbusinessman." Fine. That's all he needs to experience God.
Then the outside trigger comes. It came for James andJohn when a man walked along a beach and said, "Followme." It came for Gideon as he worked in his field. It camefor Moses when an extraordinary bush interrupted his ordinarylife. Note that the bush interrupted him. He didn'tinterrupt his life for it. There wasn't anything voluntaryabout it. It was all grace.
Grace is something that happens to us. It is not somethingwe cause to happen. An interruption, perhaps, as wego about our unsurprising lives.
PRAYER
Help me notice when something begins to burn. Amen.
