The best self-defense is not about mastering hundreds of complex moves. It’s about mastering a handful of principles that work with the body you have right now—not the body you had at 25.

This book exists for one reason: to cut through the noise. It is not about kata, belts, or sports combat. It is not about restraining an attacker or winning a prolonged fight. It is about creating a critical window of opportunity—just 3 to 5 seconds—to interrupt an attack, create space, and get to safety. Your goal is defense and survival, not active combat engagement.

The traditional martial arts curriculum is a banquet. But you don’t need the whole menu. You need the nutritional core—the protein and vitamins of personal safety. Primal Defense distills decades of combative science into seven foundational skills. These are not the “best” techniques in a dojo; they are the most reliable techniques for a person with diminished strength, reduced flexibility, and slower reaction time. Each one is built on principles of natural human movement, leverage, and pain response. They are brutally simple, easy to remember under stress, and designed to work from compromised positions (like being seated, knocked off-balance, or grabbed from behind).

Each skill is a tool. Together, they form a system. You do not need to be an athlete to learn them. You need only be willing to move, to practice, and to embrace a simple, pragmatic mindset: I am not a fighter. I am a survivor.

This book is your guide. The skills are your plan. Let’s begin.
