"Problems of Life" is a profound exploration of the cultural and social challenges facing Russia in the aftermath of the 1917 Revolution. Written by Leon Trotsky, one of the central figures of the Bolshevik movement, the work shifts focus away from the immediate concerns of civil war and economic policy toward the sphere of "byt"-the everyday customs, habits, and culture of the working class. Trotsky examines how the transition to a socialist society requires a radical transformation of daily existence, addressing topics such as family structure, the liberation of women, the struggle against alcoholism, and the necessity of widespread literacy and education.

Through a series of insightful essays, the author argues that a political and economic victory is incomplete without a corresponding cultural revolution. He emphasizes the importance of developing communal services and refining social manners to liberate individuals from the weight of archaic traditions. "Problems of Life" remains a significant historical document, offering unique insight into the early Soviet state's attempts to forge a new human consciousness and modernize a traditional society. It is an essential read for those interested in the sociology of revolutionary change and the history of political thought.
