"Prolegomena" is a foundational scholarly work exploring the historical development and theoretical underpinnings of Canon Law. Written by the esteemed canonist A. Van Hove, this volume serves as a comprehensive introduction to the study of ecclesiastical jurisprudence, providing essential context for understanding the legal framework of the Catholic Church. The work meticulously examines the sources of law, the evolution of church statutes, and the methodology required for the rigorous interpretation of the 1917 Code of Canon Law.

In this volume, Van Hove offers a deep dive into the history of legal science within the Church, tracing its trajectory from early antiquity through the medieval period and into the modern era. By analyzing the legislative authority of the Church and the formation of the Corpus Iuris Canonici, "Prolegomena" remains an invaluable resource for historians, theologians, and legal scholars. Its systematic approach clarifies the complex relationship between tradition, custom, and codified law, making it a cornerstone for anyone studying the institutional history of Christianity. This work stands as a testament to the intellectual rigor of early 20th-century canonistics and continues to be cited for its clarity and depth of research into the structural heart of religious governance.
