Paperback. A wire transfer. An anonymous manuscript. A word that means "the promise."Stockholm, autumn 2008. Susanne Nilsson is holding her father's publishing company together in his unexplained absence when she discovers that thirty-six million kronor has left Symbiola's accounts - authorized by a personal code that should have been deactivated years ago, sent to an American bank account she doesn't recognize. The reference field contains one word: Loeftet. That same week, a courier delivers the first pages of a handwritten manuscript to her office. The author identifies themselves only as FL. The story they've written is about a girl named Hanna - her childhood home, her absent father, her mother's quiet drinking, her aunt's theatrical warmth. It is, unmistakably, Susanne's own life.In Los Angeles, Jason Reynolds - a bassist still rebuilding his career after a hit-and-run accident in Stockholm five years earlier - wakes to find five million dollars in his account. The sender is Symbiola. The reference is the same Swedish word: Loeftet. Jason doesn't speak Swedish. He doesn't know anyone in Sweden. The only memory he has of Stockholm is headlights swinging toward him on a wet bridge, and a silence afterward that lasted five years. When Jason flies to Stockholm and walks into Susanne's office, two investigations converge into one. The manuscript keeps arriving, chapter by chapter. The wire transfer leads back through thirty years of interconnected lives. And a dying Scottish author on a remote Baltic island has spent the last five years writing a story he cannot finish - a story about guilt, and restitution, and a promise extracted decades ago that was never meant to be kept.Shifting between Stockholm and Los Angeles in alternating chapters, The Promise is a literary thriller about the obligations the past imposes on the present, the cost of well-intentioned silence, and what it means to finally face the question you've been too afraid to ask. The reference field contains one word: Löftet.
That same week, a courier delivers the first pages of a handwritten manuscript to her office. The author identifies themselves only as FL. The story they've written is about a girl named Hanna - her childhood home, her absent father, her mother's quiet drinking, her aunt's theatrical warmth. It is, unmistakably, Susanne's own life.
In Los Angeles, Jason Reynolds - a bassist still rebuilding his career after a hit-and-run accident in Stockholm five years earlier - wakes to find five million dollars in his account. The sender is Symbiola. The reference is the same Swedish word: Löftet. Jason doesn't speak Swedish. He doesn't know anyone in Sweden. The wire transfer leads back through thirty years of interconnected lives. And a dying Scottish author on a remote Baltic island has spent the last five years writing a story he cannot finish - a story about guilt, and restitution, and a promise extracted decades ago that was never meant to be kept.
Shifting between Stockholm and Los Angeles in alternating chapters, The Promise is a literary thriller about the obligations the past imposes on the present, the cost of well-intentioned silence, and what it means to finally face the question you've been too afraid to ask.
