DESCRIPTION: Two volume presentation set [Chatham House Academy Ramsgate] bound in contemporary full dark brown leather with gilt tooled spine. Brown leather title plates with gilt lettering. Prize plate to front paste down with inscription to fly page "The Kennet's Prize[?], T Whitehead. 1841". Marbled edges and endpapers Language: English. Book Condition: Fair: Wear to corners, edges and spine ends. 3cm tear to lower rear spine edge to Vol I. rubbed leather boards with stains. Tightly bound with strong hinges. Lightly toned unmarked pages. DJ Condition: No DJ. Pages 419, 403. Size: 18mo 16.5cm by 10cm. PROVENANCE: PRIZE PLATE: Chatham House Academy & T. Whitehead. The School was originally founded in 1797 by Dr. William Humble at Number 5 Love Lane (later Chatham Street). The pupils, both day and boarders were known as Humbles Bees. Dr. Humble was succeeded as headmaster by Thomas Whitehead Esq. J. P. He was followed by his son, The Revd. Alfred Whitehead, later to be Rural Dean and Vicar of St. Peters-in-Thanet; after whom came the Revd. Dr. Stantial who was headmaster from 1864 to 1874, when he was succeeded by the Revd. E. Gripper Banks D. D. Oxon, who was followed by Mr. T. A. Lance M. A. The last Headmaster of the College was Mr. A. J. Hendry M. A. who entered into office in 1900. In 1841 the school had 84 pupils.
