Paperback. Play isn't a break from intelligence. It's one of the ways we build it.In Q-rious About Play: The Case for Playful Intelligence, Rona Lewis makes the case for a kind of intelligence we are going to need more of, not less, as work keeps changing faster than most of us can comfortably keep up with. This is not a book about playing games at work so everyone can have a little break from the serious stuff. It is about what purposeful play strengthens in us: the human capacities that help us stay curious, connected, creative, resilient, flexible, and well when the familiar ways of working no longer fit the moment.Lewis calls these capacities the Qs: Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Creative Intelligence, Resilience, and Wellbeing. Each chapter explores one Q, why it matters, and how Purposeful Play helps make it stronger, more usable, and more available when people need it most. Through stories, research, reflection, humor, and practical examples, she shows how play gives adults a low-stakes way to practise the very skills they are expected to use in high-stakes environments.Because knowing about emotional intelligence is not the same as being able to stay regulated in a tense conversation.Understanding creativity is not the same as feeling safe enough to offer a half-formed idea.Talking about resilience is not the same as having the flexibility to recover, reframe, and try again. And telling people wellbeing matters is not the same as creating the conditions where they can actually think, contribute, connect, and breathe. At the end of several chapters, Lewis is joined by fellow play practitioners, thinkers, and "Play friends," who contribute their own Points of Q: short reflections that bring each form of intelligence to life from different perspectives.Playful Intelligence is not a sixth Q, another score to chase, or another personality label to wear. It is what becomes possible when these human capacities are strengthened through Purposeful Play and brought into the moments that matter: a hard conversation, a stalled idea, a messy collaboration, a change no one wanted, or a room full of people trying to find their way forward. At a time when organizations are dealing with burnout, disconnection, rapid change, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence, these deeply human capacities are no longer soft extras. They are practical, necessary, and increasingly rare.Warm, smart, and occasionally irreverent, Q-rious About Play invites leaders, teams, facilitators, educators, and curious humans to rethink what play is for. Play isn't the reward for the real work. It is one of the ways we become more ready for it.The future of work won't belong to the people with the highest IQ.It will belong to those who know how to stay curious, human, adaptable, and playful. Play isn’t a break from intelligence. It’s one of the ways we build it.
In Q-rious About Play: The Case for Playful Intelligence, Rona Lewis makes the case for a kind of intelligence we are going to need more of, not less, as work keeps changing faster than most of us can comfortably keep up with.
This is not a book about playing games at work so everyone can have a little break from the serious stuff. It is about what purposeful play strengthens in us: the human capacities that help us stay curious, connected, creative, resilient, flexible, and well when the familiar ways of working no longer fit the moment.
Lewis calls these capacities the Qs: Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Creative Intelligence, Resilience, and Wellbeing. Each chapter explores one Q, why it matters, and how Purposeful Play helps make it stronger, more usable, and more available when people need it most. Through stories, research, reflection, humor, and practical examples, she shows how play gives adults a low-stakes way to practise the very skills they are expected to use in high-stakes environments.
Because knowing about emotional intelligence is not the same as being able to stay regulated in a tense conversation.
Understanding creativity is not the same as feeling safe enough to offer a half-formed idea.
Talking about resilience is not the same as having the flexibility to recover, reframe, and try again.
And telling people wellbeing matters is not the same as creating the conditions where they can actually think, contribute, connect, and breathe.
At the end of several chapters, Lewis is joined by fellow play practitioners, thinkers, and “Play friends,” who contribute their own Points of Q: short reflections that bring each form of intelligence to life from different perspectives.
Playful Intelligence is not a sixth Q, another score to chase, or another personality label to wear.
They are practical, necessary, and increasingly rare.
Warm, smart, and occasionally irreverent, Q-rious About Play invites leaders, teams, facilitators, educators, and curious humans to rethink what play is for. Play isn't the reward for the real work. It is one of the ways we become more ready for it.
The future of work won't belong to the people with the highest IQ.
It will belong to those who know how to stay curious, human, adaptable, and playful.
