Listing photos show the exact copy included in this sale. Illustrated history of physics, scientific rivalry and invention in the pursuit of ever lower temperatures. Competing laboratories developed the apparatus that made gases into liquids, culminating in the race between James Dewar and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes to liquefy hydrogen and helium. Their achievements enabled experiments that revealed unexpected properties of matter, including electrical conduction without resistance and liquid flow without friction. Mendelssohn combines accounts of these discoveries with explanations of thermodynamics, superconductivity, and superfluidity, drawing on his own experience in cryogenic research.
