Quinteto de Mogador / The Mogador Quintet (Paperback)

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

The five books that make up Alberto Ruy Sánchez's Mogador Quintet, gathered for the first time in a single volume, construct a microcosm whose center pulses with the search for love and, at the same time, for the beloved woman.

The five books that form the Mogador Quintet, brought together for the first time in a single volume.

A story about the fact that loving is like reading an erotic book--one that constantly transforms in our hands.

Essaouira, or Mogador, a maritime, walled, labyrinthine city--dazzlingly beautiful, desirable, desiring, and never truly possessed. But does Mogador truly exist, or, as some claim, is it the name of a woman described as a port? Why do they say she always seduces but can never be fully possessed? Desire takes shape in Mogador through five colors or five elements: air, water, earth, fire, and the fifth essence--astonishment. The five books that make up the Mogador Quintet--Nine Times the Wonder, The Names of the Air, On the Lips of Water, The Secret Gardens of Mogador, and The Hand of Fire--brought together for the first time in a single volume, construct a microcosm whose center beats with the search for love and, simultaneously, for the beloved woman.

"Air devoured by water that absorbs the earth and its gardens, which eagerly consumes the fire. Seen as a whole and with astonishment, she thinks, as her gaze traces the spiral circles of the Mogador Quintet, this room of tiles and calligraphy we have built is like a machine to help us live and contemplate desire. A place where for more than 20 years a thousand and one stories, revelations, and ideas have interwoven. And one can wander among the circles and pieces with enormous ease. The pleasure of reading in leaps and pauses, looking at random, listening for pleasure to whatever pleases us from all that is offered."

What the critics have said:

"In his work, the erotic is not a theme or an episode: it is the clay of the narration itself. Whether in his novels (fantastic, utopian, or adventurous), in his literary criticism, or in his travel chronicles, every experience--banal or extraordinary--breathes through the erotic." --Alberto Manguel

"More than novels, his books are a new way of learning to read: the way of illumination." --Severo Sarduy

"His novel The Names of the Air is a surprise. Not the invention of a language, but a language that invents unusual atmospheres..." --Octavio Paz

"Better than a dream, this book is a journey we take without moving and that never ends." --Claude-Michel Cluny, Le Figaro Littéraire (on The Secret Gardens of Mogador)

"In this beautiful and unsettling book (The Names of the Air), a man slowly explores the universe of mystery and poetry of a woman." --Raphaëlle Rérolle, Le Monde
