Christof Thoenes ha studiato storia dell’arte a Pavia e Berlino, città in cui si è addottorato. Dopo essere stato professore onorario ad Amburgo, si è trasferito a Roma, dove vive e dove ha lavorato per molti anni alla Bibliotheca Hertziana (Istituto Max Planck per la storia dell’arte). Ha scritto contributi per numerosi volumi sulla storia dell’arte italiana, in particolare sull’architettura e la teoria dell’architettura tra il XV e il XVIII secolo.
