He laughed. He cried. He worried. He felt betrayed. He was like you and me in every way but one — He was sinless.
We were taught that Jesus is fully God and fully Man. Most of us stopped at the first half.
But He was not Superman from our comic books. Untouchable. Unreachable. Indestructible. He could have sinned. He didn't. Not once.
The church has tipped that scale for so long that the Man Jesus has nearly disappeared. We know the Christ who calmed the storm. We are far less acquainted with the Man who slept through it — exhausted.
If Jesus was a superman, we are off the hook entirely. Why strive after an obedience we could never manage? But if He was a Man who chose obedience — the same choice set before Adam, and before us — then His life is not a spectacle to admire. It is a pattern that can be followed as Jesus lived it. Dependent on the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Re-Introducing Jesus walks the whole arc of Scripture — from the Garden to Gethsemane — and takes on the questions most books step around:
• Could Jesus actually have sinned? If not, was the temptation real?
• Why does Scripture call Adam responsible for the fall — and not Eve?
• Where did the Man Jesus find His joy — and can we find it in the same place?
These are not contradictions to be explained away. They are superrational, not irrational.
With a foreword by Kenneth Boa, President of Reflections Ministries and author of Conformed to His Image and Shaped By Suffering — who first met the author 53 years ago and has walked as one of his mentors since.
Charles A. Thrall holds a BA in Philosophy and completed 88 graduate hours in the ThM program and received a CBTS from Dallas Theological Seminary. He writes for the person in the pew, not the seminary classroom.
Are you ready to be re-introduced to Jesus the Man — and find the source of His joy with our Father?
