"Reference Work" by James I. Wyer is a seminal exploration of the principles and practices of reference librarianship, serving as a cornerstone text in the field of library and information science. This comprehensive study delves into the vital relationship between the librarian and the researcher, defining the scope and methodology of effective information service. Wyer explores the various types of inquiries encountered in a library setting, from simple fact-finding to complex research assistance, providing a structured approach to satisfying the needs of diverse patrons.

Central to the work is Wyer's analysis of the philosophy of service, where he distinguishes between 'conservative' and 'liberal' theories of reference work-debating whether a librarian's primary duty is to provide the answer or to teach the patron how to find it. The book offers detailed insights into the selection of reference materials, the organization of departments, and the ethical responsibilities of the information professional. "Reference Work" remains an essential resource for understanding the historical development of modern libraries and the timeless art of mediating between users and the vast world of recorded knowledge.
