Riassunto
A follow-up to the author's The Call to Teach, published in 1995, this book continues the discussion of teaching as a calling, as well as why it matters to keep this language alive in teacher education, research on teaching, and educational policy. He notes the changes in teaching in the 21st century, particularly the managerial aspect, standardized testing, and top-down measures of educational accountability, along with the move towards creating an equitable and just education for all. He shows how the current concerns for justice, the environment, and democratic values in relation to education provide motivation for the call to teach, discussing the concept of vocation, along with purpose, function, and tradition in teaching; the ethical character of teaching and its relationship to the call to teach; the role of philosophy, theory, and wisdom in teaching; bearing witness to teachers and teaching; testimonials from teachers; and the dimensions of the ethical practice of teaching.
