Kitagawa is Professor Emeritus at the Divinity School and a member of the Department of Far Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, where he has taught the History of Religions for thirty-four years. He is an editor of the Encyclopedia of Religion, and author of On Understanding Japanese Religion and numerous other books.
