This is a very brilliant display of names of men who threw their energies into the work of modifying the sign language. To this list might be added others of equal ability. Many teachers of the deaf have considered the failure of Mr. Gallaudet to secure the oral method from England providential, and in fact a blessing in disguise, since it entailed the necessity of adopting the sign language in this country.
