Riguardo questo articolo

Descrizione:

Sheet 100x70cm folding down to title panel 17x26cm. The front features two colour maps by A.M. Rashdan with a stylised cityscape of ancient, Islamic, and modern monuments illustrated by Harraz across the top. The back has 8 highly detailed Trans-Arabian Highways Routes. Fair only. Tanned, neatly folded, worn to folds with loss at some intersections, chipping to title panel corners (affecting text to verso), translucent archival tape repairs to folds and edges at the back, and along the title panel fold. Undated, but this develops and expands on Rashdan's similarly titled and scaled Arabic language map for the Arab Federation of Touring Car Clubs and Associations (Cairo Drawing Office, 1964), and pre-1971 with Egypt referred as UAR and the Trucial Sheikhdoms as Trucial Oman. Designed to show interconnectedness within the Arab World, it was possibly a product of the Arab League's First Conference of Arab Tourism Ministers (Cairo, Feb 1968), which charged the Arab Tourist Union with implementing a unified tourism policy, and saw the publication of its "A Tourist Guide to the Arab World" in the same year (ATU 1968). The main map displays the Arab World from Algeria to Muscat and Oman and Syria to Sudan including the whole of the Arabian Peninsula on a scale of 1/7.5M. Features include state and provincial boundaries, settlements, rivers and wadis, possible flood areas, and roads of various qualities (surfaced, improved, earth, marked tracks, unmarked tracks). An inset "Diagrammatic Map of the Arab World" with the same coverage highlights international and branch routes and railways, with the routes numbered in line with the texts on the back. The Route texts present several options and variations with stopping points, landmarks, cautions, detours, petrol stations, rest houses etc for 1: Alexandria - Casablanca / 2: Alex - Cairo - Aswan - Luxor / 3: Wadi Halfa - Khartoum - Malakal - Sudan / Uganda border, Cairo - Suez - Atbara - Khartoum - Kassala - Port Sudan - Atbara - El Obeid - Kosti / 4. Khartoum - Adre - El Obeid - El Fasher / 5. Algiers - Laghouat - El Golea - In Salah - Arak - In Guezzam / 6. Oran - Bechar - Reggan - Moktar - Timimoun Corner / 7. Beirut - Damascus - Mafraq, Turkey frontier - Aleppo, Hama - Homs - Damascus - Deraa, Lebanon frontier - Damascus - Al Tanf, Aleppo - Idlib - Lattakia - Lebanon, Mafraq - Ramadi - Baghdad, Baghdad - Kuwait, Jerusalem - Amman - Aqaba / 8. 42 x 100 cm. Five-tone lithographic map with illustration by Harraz. Constant ratio linear horizontal scale 1:7,500,000. Road map also showing railways, populated places, boundaries, rivers, wadis, and possible flood areas. Includes inset map: Diagrammatic map of the Arab world. Folded. First edition of this large, decorative map, showing the highways that linked countries under Arabian influence in the early 1970s. It stretches as far north as Turkey, south to the Sudan, west to Mauritana and east beyond the Strait of Hormuz, capturing the whole of the Arabian Gulf including Kuwait, Bahrain, Muscat, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the People's Republic of Southern Yemen. The verso contains an index of main travel routes through these various countries. - The United Arab Republic, as it is here referred to, was formed through a political union of Egypt and Syria. It was instigated by the Egyptian Prime Minister Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970) and was seen as an expression of pan-Arab sentiment. Syria broke aways from the union in 1961 (and is here shown as an independent country), but Egypt continued to use the name until 1972. The People's Republic of Yemen, the only communist state to be established in the Arab world, was formed in late 1967, to last until 1990. - Some nicks and small tears, a single mark to the covers, a 1 cm tear on the left side of the map. In very good condition for a fragile map. Scarce: LibraryHub does not locate any holdings whilst Worldcat adds just eight institutional copies worldwide. - OCLC 5403988. Codice articolo 57998
