Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: The synthesis of data and material, which decisively failed to develop in the early digital age, is being realized--enticingly, playfully, and sensually--in today's architecture. This becomes apparent in various medial, spatial and structural manifestations, whereby one premise persists: In the moment in which two seemingly separate worlds meet through the interaction between digital and material processes, data and material can no longer be interpreted as a mere complement but rather as an inherent condition and thus an essential expression of architecture in the "second digital age". Closely related to this development is the increasing use of robots in the building process. Only the robot enables the fundamental integration of data and material, programming and construction, where constructive operations can be developed based on fixed rules, analyzed, and transferred at an architectural scale. The use of robots in architecture has not been treated comprehensively so far. Most publications neglect the material and constructive aspects of robot-based building processes. Similarly, the specific implications of using robots to architectural design have rarely been dealt with. The Robotic Touch for the first time fully covers these issues and features previously unpublished concepts and technical details of robotic fabrication in architecture. The new book presents 30 research projects developed and realized by the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zurich. It documents various methods and concepts of using robots in architecture, and thereby explores future developments in construction. Six topical essays ("Materiality", "Machine", "Assembly", "Design", "Scalability", "Architecture"), technical data-sheets and a glossary round out the book. Riassunto: As the connection between data and building materials grows ever closer, with digital information not just informing plans but actually being used to create the material that will construct a building—robots are necessarily playing a large role in architecture. Yet the use of robots in architecture has not been treated comprehensively until now. The Robotic Touch features thirty research projects on robots in architecture originating at ETH Zurich, documenting various methods and concepts relating to the use of robots in architecture. In particular, The Robotic Touch offers the first full analysis of the material and constructive aspects of robot-based building projects—and draws out the implications for architectural design on the growing use of robots. The volume is rounded out by six topical essays on broader aspects of the subject, along with technical data-sheets and a helpful glossary.
L'autore: Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler are architects and professors of architecture and digital fabrication at ETH Zurich. Jan Willmann is senior assistant to the chair for architecture and digital fabrication at ETH Zurich.
