The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dog ears, or marks. Small white mark on half-title page. Light foxing along fore-edge. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in very good condition (two spots where circular labels used to be). 4 ½ x 4 ½, 53 pages, 8 ounces. XX Grooks are short aphoristic statements that appear self-evident as soon as they have been formulated. His grooks often open a small window on a large world. You are sure to hear them quoted at you at any rate, and you might as well have a few handy ones from the book ready to quote right back (NEW YORK TIMES). The impact of Piet Hein on the English-speaking world may be considerable. He comes to its attention as a full-blown developed genius, often proposed for the Nobel Prize (LIFE magazine). XX Piet Hein is a master of the epigram. He must be read on at least two levels. I admire his work both on the more superficial and on the deeper level. What a wealth of significant thought it contains. His mastery of English is remarkable (NORBERT WIENER). XX [Wikipedia] Piet Hein (16 December 1905 – 17 April 1996) was a Danish polymath (mathematician, inventor, designer, writer and poet), often writing under the Old Norse pseudonym Kumbel, meaning tombstone. His short poems, known as gruks or grooks, first started to appear in the daily newspaper Politiken shortly after the German occupation of Denmark in April 1940 under the pseudonym Kumbel Kumbell. He also invented the Soma cube and the board game Hex. He studied at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (later to become the Niels Bohr Institute) of the University of Copenhagen, and Technical University of Denmark. Yale awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1972. He died in his home on Funen, Denmark in 1996. Piet Hein, who, in his own words, played mental ping-pong with Niels Bohr in the inter-War period, found himself confronted with a dilemma when the Germans occupied Denmark. He felt that he had three choices: Do nothing, flee to neutral Sweden or join the Danish resistance movement. As he explained in 1968, Sweden was out because I am not Swedish, but Danish. I could not remain at home because, if I had, every knock at the door would have sent shivers up my spine. So, I joined the Resistance. Taking as his first weapon the instrument with which he was most familiar, the pen, he wrote and had published his first grook. It passed the censors who did not grasp its real meaning. The Danes, however, understood its importance and soon it was found as graffiti all around the country. The deeper meaning of the grook was that even if you lose your freedom, do not lose your patriotism and self-respect by collaborating with the Nazis, because that sense of having betrayed your country will be more painful when freedom has been found again someday.…

Effetti del recesso
In caso di recesso dal presente contratto, ti rimborseremo tutti i pagamenti ricevuti, compresi i costi di spedizione (ad eccezione dei costi supplementari derivanti dalla tua eventuale scelta di un tipo di spedizione diverso dal tipo meno costoso di consegna standard da noi offerto).
Potremo effettuare una detrazione dal rimborso per la perdita di valore dei beni forniti, qualora tale perdita sia il risultato di una manipolazione non necessaria da parte tua.
Eseguiremo il rimborso senza indebito ritardo e non oltre 14 giorni dal giorno in cui saremo informati della tua decisione di recedere dal presente contratto.
Il rimborso sarà effettuato utilizzando lo stesso mezzo di pagamento da te usato per la transazione iniziale, salvo che tu non abbia espressamente concordato altrimenti; in ogni caso, non dovrai sostenere alcun costo quale conseguenza di tale rimborso.
Possiamo trattenere il rimborso finché non avremo ricevuto i beni oppure finché non avrai fornito la prova di averli rispediti, a seconda di quale condizione si verifichi per prima.
Dovrai rispedire i beni o consegnarli a Whitledge Books, Austin, Texas, U.S.A., senza indebito ritardo e, in ogni caso, entro 14 giorni dal giorno in cui ci hai comunicato la tua volontà di recedere dal presente contratto. Il termine è rispettato se rispedisci i beni prima della scadenza del periodo di 14 giorni. I costi diretti della restituzione dei beni saranno a tuo carico. Sei responsabile solo della diminuzione del valore dei beni risultante da una manipolazione diversa da quella necessaria per stabilire la natura, le caratteristiche e il funzionamento dei beni stessi.
Eccezioni al diritto di recesso
Il diritto di recesso non si applica a:
- La fornitura di giornali, periodici o riviste ad eccezione dei contratti di abbonamento; e
