Aggiungere al carrelloA small archive of material from the San Francisco-based St. Priapus Church, which filed for non-profit status as a religious organization in 1983. On the membership application included in this archive, members pledge: "I believe that denial of the ejaculation causes men to be mean and do that which is evil. I apply for lay membership in St. Priapus Church and pledge to devote at least four hours per week to destroying sexual frustration or furthering the cause of St. Priapus or his church." In addition to the membership application, this collection includes a 16-page "Phone Buddies" private telephone directory for Summer 1987, which reads more like personal ads. The listings include members' names and telephone numbers. In some cases, last names and addresses are also provided, and elsewhere, they offer sexual preferences. The directory includes a reprint of a feature article from The Advocate about the church that was founded by the Reverend Donald Jackson. "A lot of people take us for a joke," Jackson admitted. "But St. Priapus is a serious religion." The archive also includes the February 1988 issue of Phallos, the official newsletter of the church; a small flyer for a free "Jack-Off Buddies" party on Wednesdays and Fridays at the church; and a 12-page photomechanically reproduced brochure about the church and the history of the worship of Priapus. Materials about St. Priapus Church are scarce institutionally and in commerce. According to OCLC, Emory University has a single issue of the newsletter Phallos.
