In the fall of 1847, Young Joseph (his dad had the same name) and his brother, Alokut, were in voluntary attendance in school at Fort Lapwai. Thirty years later he was leading his people, the Nez Perce in a massive struggle against superior United States military forces. He is remembered as a clever tactitian who stood for the honour of his people. These 395 pages - includes INDEX - tell of his life and times. Original publication 1941.
