"A do-it-yourself volume for the increasing number of people who long to go ancestor-hunting but don't know how to start. . . . Scottish Roots will start many people on a stimulating new interest."
--The Scots Magazine
"[Ancestor-hunting] begins with tapping the memories and photographs of the eldest member of your own family circle. After that, this informative and entertaining book will lead you step by step, up, down and along the branches of the progenitorial tree."
--Life and Work
More and more people today are tracing their roots, and a glance at the names in the local newspaperwill attest to the huge number of Americans who are descended from the highlands and lowlands, the glens and lochs, the islands and mulls of Scotland.
Scotland offers a vast array of facilities for genealogical research, and Scottish Roots: A Step-by-Step Guide for Ancestor-Hunters tells you exactly how to tap into the wealth of services and information available to trace your Scottish forebears and make the best use of these resources. The author shows how two individuals, who initially had information only as far back as their grandparents, were each able to trace a substantial family tree using such resources as the New Registrar House, the Scottish Record Office, local libraries, Scottish folk museums, and field investigation. Instructions are included on using these resources no matter where you live.

Scottish Roots
By Alwin James
"An accessible, clearly written guide for genealogy buffs."
-Booklist
"An interesting and welcome addition to Scottish research."
-Genealogical Library Journal
"For pure reading pleasure, I'd recommend this book to anyone with the vaguest interest in Scottish genealogy. . . . If you are or know a Scotsman who is just getting started with a Scottish family tree, it's a must."
-Branches and Twigs
A country rich with family history, Scotland as a nation respects and preserves her past by preserving and housing hundreds of years of personal records. This book tells you just how to tap into that fund of information and services to trace your Scottish forebears.
Author Alwyn James describes the wealth of information available and tells you where to access it and how to make full use of the records. He provides a hands-on example to demonstrate how two Scots, who could only give details as far back as their grandparents, were able to build up a substantial family tree and discover their ancestral past.
James is married to a lovely Scottish lass, whose ancestry encouraged him to find their Highland roots. An editor of the business and politics magazine Scotland for many years, James has always been fascinated by genealogy.

Descrizione dello Store
With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. Items on Abe are not necessarily in stock at our retail locations. Please do not call the stores to place orders for Abe Books sales. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.…
