Riassunto

Before Iran became one of the world's most closely watched nuclear powers, its nuclear story began with American cooperation.

Long before the Islamic Revolution, uranium enrichment controversies, international sanctions, and the modern confrontation between Washington and Tehran, the United States was helping Iran build the foundations of a civilian nuclear program.

The Secret American Origins of Iran’s Nuclear Program takes readers back to the Cold War, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace initiative sought to spread peaceful nuclear technology around the world. Iran was among the countries that embraced the opportunity. In 1957, Washington and Tehran established a nuclear cooperation agreement, setting in motion a relationship that would help create Iran's early nuclear infrastructure.

But the story is more complicated than a simple tale of peaceful technology. The nuclear knowledge, institutions, scientific training, research facilities, and reactor technology developed during the Shah's reign would later become part of the historical foundation underlying Iran's controversial nuclear ambitions.

Inside this book, readers will discover:

• How the United States helped launch Iran's nuclear program during the Cold War

• Why Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace strategy mattered to Iran

• How the Shah's government pursued nuclear technology and energy

• The significance of the Tehran Nuclear Research Center and the U.S.-supplied research reactor

• Why Washington initially viewed Iranian nuclear development as an opportunity rather than a threat

• How American-Iranian cooperation changed as Iran's ambitions expanded

• How the 1979 Iranian Revolution transformed the nuclear relationship between Tehran and Washington

• Why the origins of Iran's nuclear program cannot be understood without examining the Cold War

The book also explores a striking historical paradox: the same international system that encouraged the peaceful spread of nuclear technology could also provide countries with scientific capabilities that later raised proliferation concerns.

This is not simply a story about reactors and uranium. It is a story about Cold War strategy, American foreign policy, Iranian ambitions, technological cooperation, and the unintended consequences of decisions made decades ago.

For readers interested in Iranian history, U.S.–Iran relations, nuclear proliferation, the Cold War, Middle Eastern geopolitics, and the history of nuclear technology, this book offers a historical examination of how Iran's nuclear journey began—and why its earliest chapter involved the United States.
