- Libro 1 di 2: The Service Record — Career Books for Veterans and Military Families
It took twenty minutes, and most of that was looking things up. The page came out with nine lines on it. The disability claim window had shut five days earlier, at ninety days out, and he had not known it was a window at all.
Nothing had gone wrong. Nobody had failed him in any way he could identify. He attended what he was asked to attend, on the dates he was told to attend it, and he was standing on the wrong side of two doors that had opened and shut without making a sound.
That is separation debt. You take it on inside a window you did not know was a window, and you service it for years, in payments too small to notice one at a time and large enough in total to change what a career adds up to.
The number that reassured you is not about you.
In April 2026, veterans aged twenty-five to thirty-four were unemployed at 8.1 percent. Nonveterans the same age were at 4.4. The 3.5 percent you have been quoted is an average across every living veteran in the labor force, carried by people who left the service thirty years ahead of you and have been employed ever since.
The deadlines are public. They are simply never assembled.
Every window in this book is published free, in plain language, with no login. The claim window belongs to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The counseling timeline belongs to the Department of Defense. SkillBridge is administered by your branch, which can change the rules. Your clearance sits with a different agency again. Five systems, five sets of rules, no single owner, and therefore no single page.
A fact that is never assembled behaves exactly like a hidden fact.
What is inside
Fourteen chapters built on a timeline rather than a process, with seventeen diagrams and twenty-one templates:
- The claim window that opens at 180 days and closes at 90, with a hard back wall and no exception for a good reason
- The counseling schedule almost nobody can recite: begin no later than 365 days out, finish no later than 90
- SkillBridge as it stands after the rank-tiered change of March 2026, and an honest account of the one thing nobody measures about it
- The records, evaluations, and citations you can pull in an afternoon while your card still works, and will pay for or wait months on afterward
- What you are actually paid, all four components of it, before anyone asks you for a number you will carry for a decade
- Terminal leave against selling leave, priced out day by day
- The first civilian resume, rather than the fixed one, is the only one you will ever write with nothing to undo
- And if your date is already behind you, what can still be paid late, sorted from what cannot
Who this is for
Eight years in or more. E-5 to E-7. O-3. Long enough that there is a level, and therefore something that can be set wrong. The risk is not unemployment. The risk is that you will be hired quickly, treated well, and placed two grades below what you were actually doing, and that nobody in the transaction, including you, will ever notice it happened.
This book will not promise you a job, a salary, or a timeline. Every figure in it carries the month it was verified.
Your separation date is the last day you can do certain work cheaply. Not the last day you can do it. The last day it is free.
