Paperback. Theodore Robert Bundy remains one of the most infamous serial killers in American history, not only for the brutality of his crimes, but for the stark contrast between his public image and his private life. Born Theodore Robert Cowell on November 24, 1946 in Burlington, Vermont, Bundy was by all outward appearances charming, intelligent, and ambitious. A law student, former psychology major at the University of Washington, and one-time political campaign worker, he used his clean-cut looks and articulate personality to gain trust and avoid suspicion. Between 1974 and 1978, Bundy carried out a series of murders, kidnappings, and assaults across seven states - Washington, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, California, and Florida. He typically targeted young women, often college-aged, luring them by feigning injury or impersonating an authority figure before abducting them to a second location. While he confessed to 30 homicides shortly before his execution, law enforcement believes the true number of victims may be higher. Bundy's case became a national spectacle for two reasons. First, he escaped from custody twice in Colorado in 1977, continuing his killing spree while on the run. Second, his trials in Florida in 1979 and 1980 were among the first to be televised nationally, turning the courtroom proceedings into a media event and cementing his notoriety in American culture. After years of denials and manipulation of the legal system, Bundy was convicted of multiple murders, including the 1978 Chi Omega sorority house murders at Florida State University and the murder of 12-year-old Kimberly Leach. He was executed in the electric chair at Florida State Prison on January 24, 1989. The story of Ted Bundy is studied not just as a criminal case, but as a case study in criminal psychology, forensic science, media coverage of crime, and the dangerous misconception that evil is always easily recognizable.
