Paperback. The water in Lake Inferior turned pink overnight. No warning. No explanation. The fish were fine. The plants grew faster than science could account for. Then, just as suddenly, the color was gone.A world away, a volcano erupted - but the lava carried a scent that outran the flames themselves, slowed to a crawl before it could destroy a single home, and left the scorched earth more fertile than before. On Mars. Near Jupiter. Across every world humanity has ever touched, the same impossible signal is appearing - and no scientist, no priest, no government has been able to explain why. They never suspected the sky itself was answering. The Seventy-Two are old - older than language, older than the idea of gods. They have shaped this world quietly for longer than humanity has existed to notice. But humanity has stopped being quiet, and stopped being small, and now the Seventy-Two are arguing among themselves about what to do about it.Some want to be understood. Some want to correct the problem - permanently, and on every world at once.A physicist, a volcanologist, a preacher, and a colonial administrator a hundred million miles from home are about to become the only line of communication between two species who have never once spoken the same language - with a deadline neither of them chose, and less time than anyone is willing to admit.THE SEVENTY-TWO is a story about first contact with something that was never really hiding - it just never needed us to notice it was there. The water in Lake Inferior turned pink overnight. No warning. No explanation. The fish were fine. The plants grew faster than science could account for. Then, just as suddenly, the color was gone.
A world away, a volcano erupted — but the lava carried a scent that outran the flames themselves, slowed to a crawl before it could destroy a single home, and left the scorched earth more fertile than before.
On Mars. Near Jupiter. Across every world humanity has ever touched, the same impossible signal is appearing — and no scientist, no priest, no government has been able to explain why.
They never suspected the sky itself was answering.
The Seventy-Two are old — older than language, older than the idea of gods. They have shaped this world quietly for longer than humanity has existed to notice. But humanity has stopped being quiet, and stopped being small, and now the Seventy-Two are arguing among themselves about what to do about it.
Some want to be understood.
Some want to correct the problem — permanently, and on every world at once.
A physicist, a volcanologist, a preacher, and a colonial administrator a hundred million miles from home are about to become the only line of communication between two species who have never once spoken the same language — with a deadline neither of them chose, and less time than anyone is willing to admit.
THE SEVENTY-TWO is a story about first contact with something that was never really hiding — it just never needed us to notice it was there.
