Paperback. Nothing you send out into your life comes back the same. This is not the problem. This is the mechanism. You live in the space between what you want and what you have. So does everyone. The question is what that space is for. In sixteen short chapters, The Shape of What Returns offers a way of reading a life: two instrument panels, one reporting what you want and one reporting what you predict; four voices in constant conversation; three doors standing between every want and the world; and the changed return of everything that does not pass through. It is a book about wanting that refuses the two familiar lies: that wanting guarantees, and that wanting is weakness. What remains is an instrument, specifically yours, imperfectly calibrated, and readable. Inside: why a feeling is a comparison rather than weather. Why the third door, the world's, was never yours alone, and why that verdict of innocence matters at layoffs, at auditions, at hospital bedsides. Why failure, under honest conditions, can leave a want more articulate than success ever would. Why the order of receiving and committing changes what a life expresses. And one careful chapter, written without false consolation, for the gaps that never close. Some gaps close. Some do not. This book keeps faith with both. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
