The air around is filled with anticipation, as it is time to embark on a new stage in life: not in anticipation of college life, married life, or creating a family — rather for retirement. In Shaping a Life of Significance for Retirement, the authors explore the transitions, opportunities, and challenges of facing retirement through a series of interviews addressing the personal dimensions of the transition from working full time to retirement. Up until this point retirement experts have mainly given advice about finances and health but have had little understanding of the more personal transitions that occur in relationships. It is clear that moving from full-time work to retirement involves important and sometimes painful adjustments in key relationships and in sources of self-worth. Shaping a Life of Significance for Retirement becomes just that, a tool for instilling significant personal growth in one’s retirement life.

Jack Hansen is semi-retired from a career of research and research leadership. After receiving a Bachelors degree from Stanford University and a Doctor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he conducted and supervised research in fluid dynamics and related areas at the Naval Research Laboratory. He then served as the Director of the Applied Research Division of the Office of Naval Research, Associate Director of the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory, Deputy Center Director for Research of the NASA Ames Research Center, and Associate Director of the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. He is the author of over seventy scholarly papers on research and research policy. He and his wife Pat reside in Greenville, South Carolina. They have one grown daughter and two grandchildren.
