The walks vary in the time they take and the challenge they present. Most of the routes take between one-and-a-half and three-and-a-half hours, with a few taking a bit longer. They range from low-level walks along valleys or around sheltered lakes, to energetic climbs to the summits of modest mountains. The routes are principally concentrated on the coastal uplands in the southern half of Ireland. The Wicklow Mountains, the Nire Valley, the majestic countryside of West Cork and Kerry, and the rugged beauty of Connemara and Mayo form the background to Lawton's Ireland. Each walk is described with Tom's characteristic attention to exact detail. He has solid advice on the countryside code, and the book is illustrated with his own superb colour photographs and with specially commissioned computer-generated maps.
