Luis de Granada was a revered Catholic theologian of the 16th century, but he preferred to be a preacher and writer, and today it is for his books that he is best remembered. He published some 45 books, and of those The Sinner’s Guide is his best known. “It is marked,” wrote an admiring scholar, “by a smooth, harmonious style of purest Spanish idiom that has merited for it the reputation of a classic, and by an ... eloquence that has made it a perennial source of religious inspiration.” Within a short time after its first appearance it was translated into Italian, Latin, French, German, Polish, and Greek. Today it can be found in all European languages as well as many Asian and African languages. Francis de Sales, the author of the classic Introduction to the Devout Life, found Granada’s books invaluable and advised Christians to “read him with reverence and devotion, like a book containing the most useful inspirations man can receive from on high, and thereby reform all the powers of the soul." This Regimen Books edition has been edited to update the language for modern readers.
