Snow. A source of passion, creativity and ingenuity - what would Canada be without it?

From the time of their arrival in North America, Europeans had to contend with snow, as had Aboriginal Peoples for centuries before them. Snow has always influenced the way we live and our ability to adapt - look no further than our constantly evolving winter sports. Snow is not only the muse of artists but also a driver of the economy. Featuring 300 artifacts, Snow presents a cultural history of this definitive northern precipitation.

This book includes over 60 images - from epic snowstorms to satirical cartoons - that reveal how snow has shaped the Canadian identity. You’ll never look at winter the same way again.

Bianca Gendreau joined the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1991. As Curator, Post and Communications, her research and publications have focused on the history of postal communications in Canada, and on the evolution of communications practices among Canadians. This field of study enabled her to explore concepts such as social behaviour, ritual and material culture through the lens of personal correspondence and printed ephemera. She has been the curator of several major exhibitions, including travelling and virtual exhibitions. The range of these projects - Snow (2013), Her Majesty's Stamps (2009), and Lace Up! Canada's Passion for Skating (2006) - attests to her interest in exhibitions as a means of expression. She is working on a new permanent exhibition, The National Stamp Collection, which will open in 2014.

Bianca Gendreau is curator, post and communications at the Canadian Museum of History.
