State, Stage, and Language first appeared in 1984. In this translation of the third Spanish edition (2001) of this collection of essays by Rodríguez (sociology of literature, U. of Granada), Read (Spanish literature and linguistics, State U. of New York at Stony Brook) makes accessible to English speakers his analysis of the radical historicity of culture and the ideological unconscious, determined by the matrix effect of distinct modes of production, that informs all discursive fields. Influenced by French Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser, he critiques theoretical linguistics (e.g., Chomsky), classic theater (Diderot), myths of poetic traditions (Mallermé), detective fiction (Chandler), and the vampire myth (Stoker).
