What if the most practical self-help book ever written was composed by a Roman emperor — in secret, for no one but himself?
Marcus Aurelius ran the most powerful empire in the ancient world. He also struggled to get out of bed in the morning, lost his temper more often than he liked, and spent his evenings writing private reminders to himself about how to be a better human being. Those reminders survived. We call them Meditations.
His friend Seneca — brilliant, wealthy, occasionally hypocritical, and entirely honest about it — spent his final years writing letters to a friend about how not to waste your life. And Epictetus, who started life as a slave and ended it as the most sought-after philosopher in Rome, built an entire system of inner freedom from inside a life he could not externally control.
Together, they answered the one question that has never gone out of fashion: How does a person actually live well?
The Stoic Year brings their answers to your calendar.
One maxim per week. Fifty-two weeks. A full year of the most serious, most practical, most rigorously tested philosophy ever developed — presented with the depth it deserves and the directness the Stoics always preferred.
Each week gives you:
- An original Stoic maxim in its full historical and philosophical context
- A deep, honest commentary that doesn't treat you like a beginner
- One concrete weekly practice — specific, demanding, and genuinely useful
- Three reflection questions designed to make you slightly uncomfortable
This is not a book of inspirational quotes.
The Stoics would have found inspirational quotes mildly embarrassing. What they believed in was practice: the daily, unglamorous, rewarding discipline of actually applying what you understand to the life you are living right now.
Over the course of fifty-two weeks, you will work through the full architecture of Stoic philosophy:
- Weeks 1–13: Building the inner citadel — control, attention, self-mastery, the art of acceptance
- Weeks 14–26: The obstacle is the way — adversity, fate, voluntary discomfort, and why your life is already long enough
- Weeks 27–39: The social animal — relationships, justice, community, and the company that makes or breaks you
- Weeks 40–52: The examined life — death, few wants, necessary suffering, and what fortune genuinely cannot take from you
"Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one."
— Marcus Aurelius
If you have read about Stoicism and want to actually practice it — or if you are coming to it fresh and refuse to be handed a simplified version — The Stoic Year is the book you open on January 1st and close, fundamentally changed, on December 31st.
One year. Fifty-two maxims. One honest practice at a time.

Descrizione dello Store
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
