Paperback. Every day, billions of people move through the world, each living a life entirely their own. Different personalities, beliefs, cultures, languages, and ambitions. Different places to be, people to see, and things to accomplish. Yet somehow, despite all those differences, we continue moving together. How is that possible? In Placed, the focus was on the people, coincidences, and unexpected moments that shape our individual lives. Structured, the second book in the Placed Series, looks at something larger: what keeps all those separate lives moving together, and the world from coming apart.Across countries, cultures, and generations, people follow rhythms, recognize expectations, and respond to rules they may never remember learning. Some structures help us cooperate and connect. Others guide our behavior, reinforce expectations, and create pressure to fall back in line when someone moves too far outside them.None of this requires everyone to think alike. We disagree, compete, challenge one another, and make our own choices. Yet somehow, society continues to function, even as millions of individual decisions pull in different directions.Structured explores the patterns that make this possible, the forces that hold us together, and what happens when someone stops moving with everyone else. Because the remarkable thing isn't simply that we each have a life of our own. It's that billions of us are living those lives at once, and somehow, we keep moving together. How do billions of people, each with their own beliefs, ambitions, cultures, and lives, somehow manage to move together? Structured explores the patterns that guide us, keep us in step, and shape the world we move through every day. This item is printed on demand. How is that possible?
In Placed, the focus was on the people, coincidences, and unexpected moments that shape our individual lives. Structured, the second book in the Placed Series, looks at something larger: what keeps all those separate lives moving together, and the world from coming apart.
Across countries, cultures, and generations, people follow rhythms, recognize expectations, and respond to rules they may never remember learning. Some structures help us cooperate and connect. Others guide our behavior, reinforce expectations, and create pressure to fall back in line when someone moves too far outside them.
None of this requires everyone to think alike. We disagree, compete, challenge one another, and make our own choices. Yet somehow, society continues to function, even as millions of individual decisions pull in different directions.
Structured explores the patterns that make this possible, the forces that hold us together, and what happens when someone stops moving with everyone else. Because the remarkable thing isn't simply that we each have a life of our own. It's that billions of us are living those lives at once, and somehow, we keep moving together.
