The Sum of Small Efforts tells the story of the romance of two young Italians and covers the time from World War One to World War Two. As a young man, Nick Riveli first travels to Argentina and livs as a gaucho, a cowboy, but after a brief prison stay, he returns to Europe and fights on the lines in the Italian Alps. Returning home, he meets Elisabetta Caproni and the couple are soon married. However, as danger begins to build in Europe, they are forced to flee for their lives in the dead of night and this takes them across France. They escape to an island south of Newfoundland in Canada, but this turns into a nightmare and they realize that their journey is far from over. They must keep moving. Their travels finally take them near Detroit. Here, they truly become an international family with children in both Canada and the United States. They spent their lives as simple, illiterate people from peasant beginnings, but with their love, perseverance and determination they carved out a better life for their children.
