"One of the Notable Early American Law Books" Stearns, Asahel [1774-1839]. A Summary of the Law and Practice of Real Actions with an Appendix of Practical Forms. With Additions. Hallowell: Glazier, Masters & Co. 1831. 5, [vii]-xxxiv, 495 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, calf lettering piece and blind fillets to spine, blind tooling to board edges. Faint spotting in a few places, light rubbing and a few shallow scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to spine and extremities, hinges cracked, early owner stamp (A.H. Ware, North Anson, Maine) and signature (J.T. Leavitt, 1836) to front free endpaper and title page. Light toning, offsetting to margins of preliminaries and rear endleaves. $450. * Second, final and best edition. This treatise is based on lectures given by Stearns at Harvard Law School, where he was one of its earliest professors. Pound says this work "proved to be one of the notable early American law books and was welcomed by a bar in need of accurate available information on technical procedure." Two of this book's former owners were likely James Tufton Leavitt [1804-1857], a Maine attorney and politician who served in both branches of the state legislature, and Albert Harris Ware [1827-1893], an attorney who practiced in North Anson, Maine.
