This book explores the potential of magnetic superconductors in storage systems, specifically focusing on superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems and using the Spanish electricity system, controlled by Red Eléctrica de España (REE), as an example.
The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic costs associated with the manufacture and maintenance of SMES systems, as well as a regulatory analysis for their implementation in the complex Spanish electrical system. The analysis also compares this system with the regulations of other countries, providing a comprehensive case study.
The book examines the possible economic and environmental benefits of using magnetic superconductors in electrical systems and provides a technical study of the use of these systems in hybrid storage systems that complement each other to optimize network performance. The study is conducted from the perspective of new distribution networks, distributed generation, and the concepts of the smart city. The book also explores potential applications and developments, such as electric vehicles.Overall, this book offers an insightful and comprehensive analysis of the potential of magnetic superconductors in storage systems. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers interested in the future of energy storage systems

Informazioni sull’autore
Enrique-Luis Molina-Ibáñez is an industrial technical engineer, telecommunications technical engineer, and has a master's degree in university research. He is also a maintenance mechanic for turbine-powered aircraft. Since 2021, he has been a teacher in professional training in the self-propelled vehicle maintenance department, specializing in maintenance processes for commercial aircraft with turbine engines. He is currently obtaining the EASA B1.1 license with the help of the maintenance company TARMAC AEROSAVE. He is the coordinator of the maintenance cycle of aircraft with turbine engines and the liaison of the training cycle with aircraft maintenance companies such as TARMAC AEROSAVE or PLD SPACE.
Between 2018 and 2021, Enrique worked at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory in Arcos de las Salinas, Teruel. The observatory belongs to the Aragon Cosmos Physics Studies Center (Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragon, CEFCA). There, he collaborated in the electrical and electronic implementation of the JPCAM wide-spectrum camera, designed for photometric mapping of the northern hemisphere sky with its 56 filters. He also collaborated in the maintenance and development of different projects of the observatory facilities and the Galactica science dissemination facilities in Arcos de las Salinas, Teruel.
Between 2016 and 2018, Enrique worked for TELEFONICA S.A. in the design of the telephone, data and internet network of the regional government of Aragon, as well as other public administrations in that region. For this, they evaluated the future growth of the networks in the region and designed and implemented the best solution that adjusted to what was requested by the client and within the budget of the moment.
Previously, between 2012 and 2016, Enrique was in the incident management department at TELEFONICA S.A. He carried out the monitoring of the SLAs (Service Level Agreements) in the Web Channels and was responsible for compliance with the Systems Development department, incident management and unavailability of the web portals. He also coordinated evolutionary/corrective processes and second-level coordination of the customer service platforms of the Online Channel.
Dr. Antonio Colmenar-Santos is a senior lecturer in the field of electrical engineering at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering at the National Distance Education University (UNED by its acronym in Spanish). In June 2014, Dr. Colmenar-Santos obtained a favourable resolution from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA by its acronym in Spanish) to be habilitated as a full professor. Dr. Colmenar-Santos has been an adjunct lecturer at both the Department of Electronic Technology at the University of Alcalá and at the Department of Electric, Electronic and Control Engineering at UNED. He has worked for AECI-ICI as a highly qualified consultant on the INTECNA project (Nicaragua) and has been part of the Spanish section of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE), working on a number of projects related to renewable energies and multimedia systems applied to teaching. Dr. Colmenar-Santos has been the coordinator of both the virtualisation and telematic Services at ETSII-UNED, as well as deputy head teacher (administration) and the Head of the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Control Engineering at UNED.
Dr. Colmenar-Santos is the author of more than 90 papers published in top peer-reviewed journals. He has participated in more than 100 national and international conferences related to renewable energies and multimedia systems applied to teaching. As a result of his extensive experience of more than 30 years as a full-time teacher, he has authored a book on the application of non-linear global stochastic optimization for the optimization of the sizing of renewable facilities attached to a reverse osmosis desalination plant in order to achieve the lowest cost of producing electricity and water or simply providing the maximal benefit regardless of the operation. This text fills a literature knowledge gap and is of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students, professionals in the field of microgrids and smart grids, and energy policymakers.
Dr. Enrique Rosales-Asensio is an industrial engineer with postgraduate education in electrical engineering (MPhil awarded by UNED), business administration (MBA awarded by the University of Alcalá), and quality, health, safety and environment management systems (MSc awarded by the University of the Balearic Islands). Dr. Rosales-Asensio obtained a favorable resolution from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA by its acronym in Spanish) to be habilitated as a lecturer.
He has published 31 scientific articles in journals indexed in the JCR (all of them Q1/Q2). He has been the Principal Investigaor of a regional R&D&I project with a competitive call, and he has supervised a doctoral thesis generating relevant contributions. Dr. Rosales-Asensio accredits five relevant publications in collaboration with researchers belonging to foreign research centers of recognized prestige, a 12-month international mobility supported by verifiable results, and has participated as an associate editor in the editorial committees of five journals indexed in the JCR. He shows regular activity in the evaluation of articles for journals indexed in the JCR, has authored 12 book chapters that include the results of scientific or technological research, contributed to 10 research conferences with relative quality indexes, and edited 7 international books and 12 special issues of journals indexed in the JCR.
Before starting as an assistant professor at the ULPGC, he was an assistant professor for two academic years at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Systems and Automatics at the University of León. Prior to this experience, he was a research professor in a project that evaluated the applicability of desalination systems based on renewable energies in water-scarce regions (University of La Laguna).
As a result of a 12-month stay in an internationally renowned research center such as the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (IES-JRC; Ispra, Italy), he published three research articles (all of them in the first decile) on a pan-European topic. After a revision and reworking of the dissertation submitted for the defense of his doctoral thesis, he published an adaptation of it in book form under the title "District Heating and Cooling Networks in the European Union".
