"The Test and Study Speller" (First Book) is a comprehensive educational resource designed to improve orthographic skills in young learners through a systematic and research-based approach. This work focuses on bridging the gap between testing student knowledge and providing focused study opportunities, emphasizing the mastery of essential vocabulary words most frequently encountered in everyday communication and literature.

By employing a specialized test-study method, the book identifies specific areas where a student requires improvement, ensuring that instructional time is used efficiently. This volume serves as a foundational guide for elementary students, fostering a strong command of the English language through repetition, clear categorization, and practical application. Daniel Starch's approach prioritizes words based on their utility and frequency, making the learning process both relevant and effective.

As a significant contribution to early 20th-century pedagogy, "The Test and Study Speller" offers valuable insight into the evolution of language instruction. Its structured lessons and methodological focus make it an important historical reference for educators and historians interested in the development of literacy and spelling curricula.
