"A Theory of Tanning: Based Upon the Study of Training Effects of Naphthalene Derivatives and Other Organic Compounds" is a specialized scientific inquiry into the chemical processes underlying leather production. Written by Yun Hua Li, a scholar in chemical engineering, this work delves into the molecular interactions between collagen and various organic substances. The study primarily focuses on the tanning properties of naphthalene derivatives, exploring how specific chemical structures influence the durability and quality of leather fibers.

This technical treatise serves as a bridge between theoretical organic chemistry and industrial application. By examining the effects of different compounds, Li provides a systematic framework for understanding how synthetic materials can be utilized effectively in the tanning industry. It covers experimental methodologies and analytical observations that were foundational to early 20th-century leather chemistry. Professionals in chemical engineering, materials science, and those interested in the history of industrial chemistry will find this work an informative resource for understanding the evolution of tanning theories and the scientific principles that govern leather manufacturing.
