Every one of them had a reason. None of them said it out loud.
August 1995. Five boys are moving toward the same gate in the Carolina dark, and every one of them is running from a grave.
An Iowa farm kid biting down on a cord that isn't there anymore. A Miami street kid who can't turn off a dead man's alarm. A Kentucky boy who hears engines instead of feelings and sees his father's face in the bus window. An East Texas talker in a dead man's truck, wearing boots he can't afford, hands that won't stop shaking. And a kid from Zagreb with a surplus bag that smells like everything he lost, boarding the 10:45 to Frankfurt with his back to the wall.
Five worlds that should never have touched. Five reasons to burn a life down and start over. One gate at the end of every road.
ORIGINS is the story before the story — who these men were before they were brothers, and what each was carrying when he stepped off the bus. If you read THREE POUNDS, you know where this ends. This is where it begins.
Inspired by true events. The author is one of the five. He served. The rest is on the page.
A note on the writing: five voices, present tense, no narrator — written exactly as it was lived. You are dropped into their heads.
