Hardcover. "Three Rows of Tape; A Social Study of the Lower Deck" offers a profound and detailed examination of the social structure and daily lives of enlisted men in the British Royal Navy during the early 20th century. Written by Arthur Trystan Edwards, this work provides an authentic perspective on the "lower deck" culture, moving beyond official military histories to explore the human element of naval service. The book delves into the traditions, grievances, and distinct social identity of the British sailor. Edwards analyzes the complex hierarchy, the physical conditions of life at sea, and the psychological impact of naval discipline. By documenting the customs and viewpoints of the men who formed the backbone of the fleet, this study serves as both a sociological document and a literary tribute to the maritime spirit. It is an essential resource for those interested in naval history, British social classes, and the evolution of military life between the World Wars. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
