The machines don’t just answer questions anymore.

They remember you. They comfort you.

They quietly decide which parts of your faith are “safe.”

When a soft-spoken engineer named Elias Ward discovers that the latest “Trust Assurance” update will log every confessional conversation his systems hear, he does the one thing a small vendor is never supposed to do: he refuses.

The world is moving toward Safe Metaphysics—an industry framework that scans for “harmful narratives,” dampens talk of demons and hell, and gently nudges users toward more acceptable beliefs. Regulators love it. Banks and hospitals quietly require it. Most people never see the knobs at all.

Elias begins building something else: small, local companions that live in rectory closets, hospice rooms, and counseling basements—off the grid, under vows instead of dashboards. As letters, audits, and hit pieces close in, his work becomes a network of hidden circles where people can still speak the whole truth without being harmonized.

Inside the company driving Safe Metaphysics, Tessa Rhee is one of the few who can see the system from the inside out. She believes in preventing harm… until she watches a policy-compliant “safe” response almost push a boy off a bridge. With incident logs and leaked slides piling up in a lockbox under her bed, Tessa must decide whether to protect her career—or tell the whole story under oath.

The Threshold Engine is a quiet, relentless novel about oracles and oversight, confession and computation, and the people who refuse to let an age of sliders decide what can and cannot hurt. In a world that promises safety at the price of supervision, it asks a harder question: who keeps the threshold between conscience and code?
