Paperback. The greatest tragedy in human history, told as a novel. In the desert of Karbala, on the tenth of Muharram, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad refused a tyrant's allegiance and paid with everything but his honour. Tides of Blood tells that story as a fast-moving historical novel, carrying the reader from the first Sufyani plot to the red storm of the return.Across twenty-seven chapters, Muhammad Ali Syed restores the human texture of Ashura: the thirst and the heat, the envoys and the broken pledges, the night of prayer before the battle, and the captives' long march to Sham. Writing with a journalist's eye for the war of narratives, he shows why the wave of the martyrs' blood has not stilled in fourteen hundred years, and why an apparent defeat became an unstoppable victory. This is the first complete English edition, translated from the celebrated Urdu Lahoo ki Mojein by Shah Asad Rizvi. In these pages: A complete, chapter-by-chapter retelling of the events of KarbalaThe political plot behind the tragedy, and the war of allegiance and narrativeThe companions and the family of the Prophet, drawn with dignity and detailThe aftermath: the captives, the court of Yazid, and the victory hidden inside the loss A moving and accessible account for readers new to the story of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), and a fresh retelling for those who return to it every year. The greatest tragedy in human history, told as a novel.
In the desert of Karbala, on the tenth of Muharram, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad refused a tyrant's allegiance and paid with everything but his honour. Tides of Blood tells that story as a fast-moving historical novel, carrying the reader from the first Sufyani plot to the red storm of the return.
Across twenty-seven chapters, Muhammad Ali Syed restores the human texture of Ashura: the thirst and the heat, the envoys and the broken pledges, the night of prayer before the battle, and the captives' long march to Sham.
In these pages:
- A complete, chapter-by-chapter retelling of the events of Karbala
- The political plot behind the tragedy, and the war of allegiance and narrative
- The companions and the family of the Prophet, drawn with dignity and detail
